The Master’s Program


The program establishes a close relationship between its Area of Concentration—Mechanical Sciences—and its Research Lines: “Advanced Materials and Manufacturing” and “Fluid and Solid Dynamics.”

The proposed courses ensure training in both research and teaching in Mechanical Engineering and provide support to the Research Lines. All courses offered by the program carry 3 (three) credits, corresponding to 3 (three) in-person hours per week.

Regular students are required to take at least two general core courses, including:

  • Instrumentation
  • Scientific Methodology
  • Mathematical Methods
  • Numerical Methods
  • Continuum Mechanics
  • Experimental Design
  • Manufacturing Processes

The remaining courses are defined jointly by the student and their advisor, totaling a minimum of 24 credits, which should preferably be completed within the first two semesters of the program.

It is also mandatory to complete the required workload of complementary activities. In the case of this program, this corresponds to 192 hours, including activities such as teaching internships, submission and publication of articles, participation in conferences, among others (see specific regulations).

Course Flowchart

Master’s students must meet the following requirements to begin the dissertation defense process:

  • Qualification Exam: Mandatory for students between 12 and 18 months after enrollment.
  • Defense: Requires at least 18 months in the program, completion of 24 credits, fulfillment of complementary activities, and scientific production.

After submitting the scheduling request form, the student will have up to 30 days—counted from the approval of the proposed examination committee by the PPGMEC Committee—to complete the defense.

Evaluation Criteria

The Master’s dissertation defense and the qualification exam must be conducted in person. External examiners from outside Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG) may participate via videoconference, in accordance with procedures previously established by the PPGMEC Committee.

The questioning (oral examination), following the candidate’s presentation, will take place in a public session. Immediately after the conclusion of the defense or qualification, the examination committee will meet in a closed session, where each examiner will express their judgment, determining whether the candidate is approved or failed.

In the QUALIFICATION EXAM, the student may be either approved or failed; no grade is assigned. A student will be considered approved if they receive approval from the majority of the examining committee members.

In case of failure:

  • The student may take a new Qualification Exam within a maximum period of 60 days after the failure.
  • The student’s enrollment will be automatically canceled if they fail the Qualification Exam twice.

Graduate Profile

The program aims to provide solid training for professionals capable of conducting research independently and working on scientific and technological projects focused on proposing well-founded, innovative, and sustainable solutions in different areas of Mechanical Engineering.

In this context, graduates with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Sciences from PPGMEC at Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG) are expected to demonstrate competence in generating, analyzing, and applying scientific and technological knowledge, as well as engaging in teaching and knowledge dissemination, contributing to the improvement of education quality both regionally and nationally.

Furthermore, graduates are expected to establish qualified interaction with the scientific community at national and international levels, being able to understand, adapt, and develop solutions at the forefront of scientific and technological knowledge, thereby contributing to the scientific, technological, and socioeconomic development of the region and the country.
