Dissertation Developed at PPGMEC/UFG Receives ABCM Diversity Award

The Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Goiás (PPGMEC/UFG) celebrates another important academic achievement. Alumna Mylena Carvalho Silva was awarded first place in the Master’s Degree – Black, Brown, or Indigenous People (PPI) category of the ABCM Diversity Award 2025, promoted by the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering (ABCM).

The award recognized her master's dissertation entitled “Simulation of Flow in Savonius Wind Turbines”, developed under the supervision of Professor Andreia Aoyagui Nascimento, a permanent faculty member of PPGMEC/UFG. The research stands out for its application of computational simulation techniques to the study of vertical-axis wind turbines, contributing to advances in renewable energy and fluid dynamics research.

In addition to her work within the graduate program, Mylena Carvalho Silva was also a researcher affiliated with CEHTES-UFG, strengthening the integration between research centers and graduate programs at the Federal University of Goiás.

The ABCM Diversity Award aims to recognize outstanding academic work developed by researchers from groups historically underrepresented in Mechanical Engineering and related fields. Submissions are evaluated based on scientific and technical quality, relevance of the research topic, academic and social impact, and alignment with the objectives of the award.

The award ceremony will take place during the 13th National Congress of Mechanical Engineering (CONEM 2026), which will be held from August 10 to 14, 2026, in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. The event brings together researchers, faculty members, students, and professionals from across the country and is considered one of the most important national forums for the dissemination and discussion of scientific and technological advances in Mechanical Engineering.

According to Professor Andreia Aoyagui Nascimento, this achievement highlights the quality of the research developed within the program and the ability of its students to contribute to relevant scientific and technological challenges facing society.

This national recognition reinforces PPGMEC/UFG’s commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and inclusion, as well as to the education of researchers capable of generating knowledge and contributing to the technological development of Brazil.

The coordination of PPGMEC/UFG congratulates Mylena Carvalho Silva and Professor Andreia Aoyagui Nascimento on this important achievement, which is a source of pride for the entire academic community and further demonstrates the relevance and impact of the research conducted within the program.
